Question 1

Should I repair or replace my AC if it's 10 years old?

Accepted Answer

Usually repair, as long as the repair passes the $5,000 rule: 10 years times the repair price under $5,000. A capacitor, contactor or fan motor on a 10-year-old system is almost always worth fixing. A compressor at 10 years is a closer call, and we'll quote both.

Question 2

What is the $5,000 rule for AC repair?

Accepted Answer

Multiply the system's age by the repair cost. Under $5,000, repairing usually makes sense; over $5,000, a replacement is usually the better value. It's a starting point, and the system's condition and refrigerant matter too.

Question 3

How long does an AC last in Orange County?

Accepted Answer

Typically 12–15 years inland, where long hot summers work the system hard, and often longer near the coast. Yearly maintenance, a clean outdoor coil and fixing a weak capacitor early all add years.

Question 4

Is it worth replacing the compressor on an old AC?

Accepted Answer

Usually not on a system older than about 12 years or on an R-22 system. A compressor costs $1,800–$2,800, which is a third of a new system, and the rest of the system is just as old. On a newer system, especially with the compressor under warranty ($700–$1,450), it's often worth it.

Question 5

Should I replace my R-22 air conditioner?

Accepted Answer

If it needs a refrigerant repair, usually yes. R-22 is no longer produced and reclaimed refrigerant is expensive. If an R-22 system is running fine, there's no need to replace it before it fails, but it's smart to plan for it.

Question 6

Can I replace just the outdoor unit?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, but we usually recommend replacing the indoor and outdoor parts together so they're matched, run at their rated efficiency and carry the full manufacturer's warranty. We'll explain when an outdoor-only replacement makes sense.

Question 7

How much does a new AC cost in Orange County?

Accepted Answer

At Smartchoice, $5,950–$8,450 installed for 2–5 tons, or $7,500–$12,000 for an AC and furnace together, including the permit, HERS test, a 10-year parts warranty and a 5-year labor warranty.

Question 8

Do you offer financing for a new AC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. 0% financing for 12 months is available on qualifying HVAC installations, subject to credit approval.
