Short answer: multiply your AC’s age by the repair price. If the result is under $5,000, repair it; if it’s over $5,000, get a replacement quote too. A $250 capacitor on a 6-year-old system is an easy repair. A $2,300 compressor on a 13-year-old system usually isn’t. Two things push toward replacement no matter what the math says: an old R-22 system (installed before about 2010) and a system that keeps breaking down.

We Fix First
Most contractors sell you a new system. We try to fix yours first. Every no-cool call starts with a diagnosis, and you get a flat repair price. If the system is old enough that a replacement makes more sense, we show you both numbers side by side and you decide. Many of our calls end with a capacitor or a contactor, not a new system.
The $5,000 Rule
Take the age of the system in years and multiply it by the repair price.
| System age | Repair | Math | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 years | Capacitor, from $250 | 6 × 250 = 1,500 | Repair |
| 9 years | Contactor and capacitor, about $490 | 9 × 490 = 4,410 | Repair |
| 4 years | Compressor under warranty, about $1,100 | 4 × 1,100 = 4,400 | Repair |
| 13 years | Compressor out of warranty, about $2,300 | 13 × 2,300 = 29,900 | Get a replacement quote |
| 16 years, R-22 | Refrigerant leak and recharge | any amount | Replace |
It’s a rule of thumb, not a law. A newer system with a big repair can still be worth fixing, especially when the part is under the manufacturer’s warranty, and we’ll tell you when the math doesn’t tell the whole story.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your AC
- Age. In inland Orange County an AC typically lasts 12–15 years. Past 15, most major repairs fail the $5,000 rule.
- R-22 refrigerant. Systems installed before about 2010 usually run on R-22, which is no longer made. Every leak means expensive reclaimed refrigerant.
- Repeated repairs. Two or more significant repairs in two summers usually means the next one is coming.
- Rising electric bills. An older, less efficient system costs more to run every month, especially on SCE time-of-use rates in the afternoon.
- It can’t keep up. Rooms that never cool down on a 95°F afternoon, long run times, or a house that feels humid even when the AC is running.
- Noise and short-cycling. Grinding, banging or a system that starts and stops every few minutes.
One sign alone isn’t a verdict. An old system that runs well and is cheap to fix can be worth keeping for a few more summers.
R-22, R-410A and R-454B: What Your Refrigerant Means
- R-22 (installed before about 2010): no longer made. Repairs that need refrigerant are expensive and quoted on site, and we always quote a new system alongside them.
- R-410A (about 2010–2024): still fully serviceable. It’s getting more expensive as production is phased down, but a working R-410A system doesn’t need to be replaced because of its refrigerant.
- R-454B (new systems since 2025): the new standard refrigerant. If you replace, this is what you’ll get.
Repairing vs. Replacing with a Heat Pump
If you’re replacing both the AC and an older gas furnace, a heat pump does both jobs with one outdoor unit and works well in Orange County’s mild winters. Ask us about current SCE (or Anaheim Public Utilities) and TECH Clean California heat pump incentives. See heat pump installation.

AC Repair or Replace FAQ
Should I repair or replace my AC if it’s 10 years old?
Usually repair, as long as the repair passes the $5,000 rule: 10 years times the repair price under $5,000. A capacitor, contactor or fan motor on a 10-year-old system is almost always worth fixing. A compressor at 10 years is a closer call, and we’ll quote both.
What is the $5,000 rule for AC repair?
Multiply the system’s age by the repair cost. Under $5,000, repairing usually makes sense; over $5,000, a replacement is usually the better value. It’s a starting point, and the system’s condition and refrigerant matter too.
How long does an AC last in Orange County?
Typically 12–15 years inland, where long hot summers work the system hard, and often longer near the coast. Yearly maintenance, a clean outdoor coil and fixing a weak capacitor early all add years.
Is it worth replacing the compressor on an old AC?
Usually not on a system older than about 12 years or on an R-22 system. A compressor costs $1,800–$2,800, which is a third of a new system, and the rest of the system is just as old. On a newer system, especially with the compressor under warranty ($700–$1,450), it’s often worth it.
Should I replace my R-22 air conditioner?
If it needs a refrigerant repair, usually yes. R-22 is no longer produced and reclaimed refrigerant is expensive. If an R-22 system is running fine, there’s no need to replace it before it fails, but it’s smart to plan for it.
Can I replace just the outdoor unit?
Sometimes, but we usually recommend replacing the indoor and outdoor parts together so they’re matched, run at their rated efficiency and carry the full manufacturer’s warranty. We’ll explain when an outdoor-only replacement makes sense.
How much does a new AC cost in Orange County?
At Smartchoice, $5,950–$8,450 installed for 2–5 tons, or $7,500–$12,000 for an AC and furnace together, including the permit, HERS test, a 10-year parts warranty and a 5-year labor warranty.
Do you offer financing for a new AC?
Yes. 0% financing for 12 months is available on qualifying HVAC installations, subject to credit approval.
