Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair
- Blowing cold air: often the thermostat fan set to ON, a tripped limit switch from a dirty filter, or an igniter or flame sensor that has failed. See why a furnace blows cold air.
- Lights, then shuts off after a few seconds: almost always a dirty flame sensor (cleaning from $195).
- Clicking but no flame: a failed igniter or a gas valve problem.
- Turning on and off every few minutes: restricted airflow, a dirty filter or an oversized furnace.
- Some rooms cold, others warm: duct, airflow or balancing problems. See fixing cold rooms in winter.
- Squealing, banging or rattling: blower or inducer motor bearings, or a loose panel.
- A burning smell that doesn’t go away: dust burn-off for the first few minutes of the season is normal; an electrical or plastic smell is not. Shut it off and call.
Furnace Safety Comes First
Important: a yellow or flickering burner flame, a rotten-egg smell, or a furnace that keeps shutting itself off can signal a gas leak or a cracked heat exchanger, which is a carbon-monoxide risk. Shut the system down and call us, or SoCalGas first if you smell gas. Every repair visit includes a safety check of the heat exchanger, gas connections, venting and ignition, and a reminder to test your CO detectors.
Repairs We Finish on the First Visit
Our trucks carry the basic parts that fail most: igniters, flame sensors, blower capacitors, limit switches and more, so most no-heat calls are fixed the same day. When a part has to be ordered (a blower motor for a specific model, a control board or a gas valve), we tell you the price and the date before you decide.
Repair First, Replace Only When It Makes Sense
Most contractors sell you a new system. We try to fix yours first. Furnaces in Southern California often last 20 years or more because they run only a few months a year, so most problems are worth repairing. We use the $5,000 rule: multiply the furnace’s age by the repair price; under $5,000, repairing is usually the better deal.

No. We don’t run after-hours or Sunday service. The office answers Monday to Friday 8–5 and Saturday 9–4, and calls before noon are usually seen the same day. If you smell gas, leave the house and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 first; they respond at any hour.
Should I repair or replace my furnace?
Use the $5,000 rule: multiply the furnace’s age by the repair price. Under $5,000, repair; over $5,000, get a replacement quote alongside it. Southern California furnaces often last 20 years or more, so most repairs are worth it. My furnace smells like gas. Is that dangerous?
Treat it as an emergency. Leave the house, don’t flip any switches or light anything on the way out, and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside; they come out free, at any hour. Once the gas company has cleared the home, call us: we find the source, usually a gas valve, a loose fitting or a cracked heat exchanger, and fix it. A faint smell for a few seconds at startup on an older furnace can be normal; a smell that lingers never is.
Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
The usual causes, roughly in order: the thermostat fan is set to ON instead of AUTO; a dirty filter has overheated the furnace and tripped the limit switch; the igniter or flame sensor is failing, so the burners never light; or the pilot or gas supply is out. Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?
That’s short cycling, and it wears a furnace out fast. Most often it’s restricted airflow from a dirty filter or a blocked return, which makes the furnace overheat and shut off on the limit switch. A dirty flame sensor causes the same stop-start pattern. Less often it’s a thermostat near a heat source or a furnace that was oversized for the house.
Is a burning smell normal when I turn the heat on for the first time?
For the first 10–20 minutes of the season, yes: it’s dust burning off the heat exchanger after months of sitting idle, and it should clear with a window open. A smell that comes back every cycle, smells electrical or like plastic, or comes with a tripped breaker is not normal: turn the furnace off and call us. California law requires a working carbon monoxide detector in every home with gas appliances.
