Service Repair
Our highly skilled technicians ensuring your equipment operates efficiently and safely.
Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s power — and the 100-amp panels installed in most Orange County homes between the 1960s and the 1980s were never designed for an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range or an ADU. Smartchoice Air Conditioning, Heating & Electrical provides safe, code-compliant electrical panel upgrades across Orange County: 100-amp to 200-amp service upgrades, 400-amp service for larger homes, sub-panels, and replacement of recalled Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels. As licensed C-10 electricians (CSLB #1120145) we pull the permit, coordinate the shutoff and meter release with Southern California Edison, and pass the city inspection — start to finish, usually in one day.
Why Choose Smartchoice for Your Panel Upgrade?
- Licensed & permit-handled: C-10 electricians who file the permit, coordinate the meter shutoff with Southern California Edison, and pass inspection for you.
- Right-sized for your home: we calculate your real electrical load so your new panel — 200A for most homes, 400A where it’s warranted — fits your needs today and leaves room to grow.
- Safety & code first: every install meets current NEC and Orange County code — no shortcuts on the equipment that protects your home from electrical fire.
- Clean, guaranteed work: tidy, clearly labeled Siemens panels backed by a one-year labor warranty.
- Both trades under one roof: if the upgrade is for a heat pump or EV charger, the same company sizes the panel and installs the equipment — one crew, one permit, one schedule.
Our Electrical Panel Services
- 200-amp panel upgrades: replace a 100-amp panel or fuse box with a modern 200-amp service — the standard for an Orange County home today.
- 400-amp service: for large homes, homes with an ADU, or households running two EV chargers, a heat pump and a pool or spa together.
- Sub-panel installation: add capacity for a garage, workshop, ADU, or a dedicated EV-charger circuit without replacing the main panel.
- Federal Pacific, Zinsco and Sylvania replacement: swap out the recalled and insurance-flagged panels common in 1960s–80s tract homes.
- Panel repairs: failing breakers, double-tapped breakers, corroded bus bars, and meter-main problems.
200-Amp Panel Upgrade Cost in Orange County
Most 200-amp panel upgrades with Smartchoice cost $4,500 to $5,000. That price includes the new Siemens panel, grounding and bonding to current code, the permit and inspection, and clear labeling of every circuit, plus a one-year labor warranty. What moves the number: relocating the meter or main, a 400-amp service, adding a sub-panel, or a home where Southern California Edison requires the overhead riser or underground service conductors to be replaced — that utility-side work is quoted separately once SCE has looked at the service. We give you a flat written price after a free on-site assessment; there’s no charge to find out what you need.
SCE Charge Ready Home: A Panel Upgrade That Can Cost You Nothing
If the upgrade is for an EV charger, Southern California Edison’s Charge Ready Home program can pay for it. Smartchoice is a participating contractor. Income-qualified households — under 80% of area median income, or enrolled in a public-assistance program — can have up to 100% of eligible costs covered, capped at $4,200, which includes a 200-amp panel replacement, the dedicated 240-volt circuit and the charging outlet. Homes in designated disadvantaged communities qualify for 50%, capped at $2,100. How it works: you apply with SCE and receive a prequalification ID; we verify it, then handle the permit, the installation and all utility coordination. Ask us about it before you pay for a panel out of pocket — see our EV charger installation page for the full picture.
When a 200-Amp Upgrade Is Worth It
If you’re adding any one of these, almost certainly: a Level 2 EV charger (40–60 amps), a heat pump (30–60 amps), an induction range, an electric dryer or water heater, an ADU, or home battery storage. Most 100-amp panels in 1970s–80s homes in Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills, Fullerton and Placentia are already near their limit with the original loads. A 200-amp service gives you headroom for the next twenty years, and it’s the first thing an inspector, insurer or buyer looks at. If you’re planning two EVs plus a heat pump plus an ADU, that’s when we talk about 400 amps.
The “80% Rule” for Electrical Panels
Electrical code treats anything that runs for three hours or more — an EV charger, a heat pump, a pool pump — as a continuous load, and a continuous load may only use 80% of its circuit’s rating. So a 48-amp EV charger needs a 60-amp breaker, and a panel’s total continuous loads can’t exceed 80% of its main breaker. This is why a 100-amp panel that “has open slots” still can’t take an EV charger: the slots aren’t the limit, the capacity is. Our load calculation applies this rule to your actual appliances before we recommend a panel size.
Old Panels and Home Insurance
Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok), Zinsco and some Sylvania panels have documented failure rates — breakers that don’t trip under fault — and they are common in Orange County homes built from the 1960s through the early 1980s. Many California insurers now decline new policies, or non-renew existing ones, on homes with these panels, and buyers’ inspectors flag them every time. If you have one, a panel replacement has stopped being an upgrade and become a requirement — and it’s the same one-day job as a 200-amp upgrade, at the same price.
What Happens on Install Day
We coordinate the shutoff with Southern California Edison in advance. On the day, power is off for roughly four to eight hours while the old panel comes out and the new one goes in, grounding and bonding are brought to code, and every circuit is labeled. You have power back the same day, as soon as the installation is complete. The city inspection and SCE’s formal meter release follow within a couple of days — we schedule both and meet the inspector, so there’s nothing for you to chase. One day on site for a standard 200-amp upgrade; longer only if the service entrance or meter is being relocated.
One note on tax credits: the federal 25C credit that covered panel upgrades (up to $600) ended for installations after December 31, 2025. For 2026, the real money is Charge Ready Home for EV-related upgrades, and our 0% financing on HVAC projects that include a panel upgrade.
Electrical Panel Upgrade FAQs
How much does it cost to upgrade to a 200-amp panel in Orange County?
Most 200-amp upgrades with Smartchoice run $4,500 to $5,000, including the new Siemens panel, grounding and bonding, permit and inspection, and circuit labeling, with a one-year labor warranty. Relocating the meter, going to 400 amps or adding a sub-panel costs more; utility-side work like replacing the riser or service conductors is quoted separately once SCE has assessed it. The on-site assessment and written quote are free.
Can I get my panel upgrade covered by SCE’s Charge Ready Home program?
If it’s for an EV charger, often yes — and Smartchoice is a participating contractor. Income-qualified households can have up to 100% of eligible costs covered, capped at $4,200, including a 200-amp panel, the dedicated circuit and the charging outlet; homes in designated disadvantaged communities qualify for 50%, capped at $2,100. You apply with SCE and receive a prequalification ID; we verify it and handle the permit, installation and utility coordination from there.
Is it worth upgrading to 200-amp service?
If you’re adding an EV charger, heat pump, induction range, ADU or battery storage, yes — a 100-amp panel in a 1970s–80s Orange County home is usually already near its limit. A 200-amp service covers all of those with room to spare, and it’s what inspectors, insurers and buyers expect to see. If the only change is a like-for-like appliance swap and your panel is healthy, we’ll tell you an upgrade can wait.
Do you install 400-amp panels?
Yes. A 400-amp service makes sense for large homes and for households stacking several big loads — two EV chargers, a heat pump, a pool or spa, and an ADU on the same service. It involves a larger meter-main and coordination with Southern California Edison on the service conductors, so it’s a bigger job than a 200-amp upgrade; we scope it with a full load calculation and give you a flat price before any work starts.
What is the “80% rule” for electrical panels?
Electrical code limits continuous loads — anything that runs three hours or more, like an EV charger or heat pump — to 80% of the circuit and panel rating. A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp breaker; a 100-amp panel can’t carry an EV charger on top of normal household loads even with open breaker slots. Our load calculation applies the rule to your actual appliances before we recommend a panel size.
Do I need a permit to upgrade to 200-amp service?
Yes — every Orange County city requires a permit and inspection for panel work, and Southern California Edison has to disconnect and reconnect the service. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, coordinate the meter release with SCE, and include it all in the price. An unpermitted panel is a problem at resale and can void an insurance claim after a fire.
How long does a panel upgrade take, and will my power be off?
A standard 200-amp upgrade is one day on site. Power is off for roughly four to eight hours while the panel is replaced, grounding and bonding are brought to code, and circuits are labeled — and it’s back on the same day, as soon as the installation is complete. The city inspection and SCE’s formal meter release follow within a couple of days; we schedule both. Relocating the meter or service entrance adds time, and we’ll tell you up front if that applies.
Will a panel upgrade let me add an EV charger or heat pump?
That’s usually the reason for the upgrade, and yes. A 200-amp panel has the capacity for a Level 2 charger (40–60 amps) and a heat pump (30–60 amps) alongside normal household loads. Because we hold both the electrical and HVAC licenses, we can install the EV charger or heat pump with the panel — one crew, one permit, one inspection.
