Your circuit breakers are the quiet guardians of your home’s electrical system. Each one is built to cut power the instant a circuit draws too much current — stopping an overload or short before it can overheat wiring or start a fire. When a breaker is worn, undersized, or missing, that protection breaks down. Smartchoice Air Conditioning, Heating & Electrical provides safe, code-compliant breaker installation and replacement across Orange County, from a single new circuit to AFCI/GFCI upgrades and sub-panel work. As a licensed C-10 electrical contractor (CSLB #1120145), we do it right and to code — with free estimates.
And because we’re licensed for both electrical and HVAC, we’re the natural call when the problem lives between the two — like a breaker that trips every time the AC starts, or a new dedicated circuit for a heat pump or EV charger. One company, both trades, no finger-pointing.
Why Choose Smartchoice for Breaker Installation?
- Licensed & code-compliant: C-10 electricians whose installations meet current NEC and Orange County code — no guesswork on the components that protect your home from fire.
- Safety first: we make sure every breaker is the correct type and amperage for its circuit and compatible with your panel — a detail that matters more than most homeowners realize.
- Right-sized for your home: we install breakers and circuits built to handle your real power demands, with room for modern loads.
- Clean, guaranteed work: tidy, clearly-labeled circuits backed by our workmanship guarantee.
Our Breaker Installation Services
- New breaker & dedicated circuits: add circuits for new appliances, a home office, a garage, an AC system, or an EV charger — so high-draw equipment gets its own safe, dedicated line.
- Breaker replacement: swap out worn, damaged, or nuisance-tripping breakers to restore reliable, safe protection.
- AFCI & GFCI breakers: upgrade to modern arc-fault and ground-fault protection in the areas where today’s codes require them (more on the difference below).
- Sub-panel installation: add a sub-panel to expand capacity for a garage, workshop, ADU, or a cluster of new circuits without replacing your whole main panel.
- Panel upgrades: when your panel is full or outdated, we install new breakers as part of a modern 200-amp service upgrade.
- Troubleshooting & repairs: diagnose why a breaker keeps tripping and fix the real cause — not just reset it and hope.
Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?
A breaker that trips again and again isn’t being annoying — it’s doing its job and warning you about something. The usual causes:
- An overloaded circuit — too many devices pulling power on one circuit. Often the fix is a new dedicated circuit, not a bigger breaker.
- A short circuit or ground fault — a wiring fault that trips the breaker instantly as a safety response.
- A worn or faulty breaker — breakers wear out, and an old one can start tripping at loads it should handle easily.
- Too few circuits — older homes often weren’t wired for modern power demands and need more circuits or a panel upgrade.
Important: you should never simply size up a breaker to stop the tripping. A breaker is matched to the wire behind it, and installing one that’s too large lets the wiring overheat without tripping — a genuine fire risk. The right fix is diagnosing why it trips and correcting that, which is exactly what our electricians do.
Safety first: a breaker that feels warm, looks scorched, gives off a burning smell, won’t reset, or trips the instant it’s switched on points to a serious fault. Stop resetting it and call a licensed electrician right away. And never replace a breaker yourself — using the wrong type or amperage, or a breaker that isn’t compatible with your panel, is one of the most common causes of electrical fires.
AFCI and GFCI Breakers: Built-In Safety
Modern electrical codes call for two special breaker types in specific areas of the home, and they protect against different dangers. A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) guards against shock by cutting power when current strays where it shouldn’t — required around water, like kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor outlets. An AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter) guards against fire by detecting the dangerous arcing of damaged or loose wiring — required in living areas like bedrooms. If your home is older, upgrading to AFCI/GFCI breakers is one of the most meaningful safety improvements you can make.
Permits, Code & Safety — Handled
Breaker and circuit work needs to be done to code, and panel or new-circuit work often requires a permit and inspection in Orange County. As licensed C-10 electricians, we handle the permitting and inspection, match every breaker correctly to its circuit and your panel, and leave you with work that’s safe, documented, and up to code — never a job for an unlicensed handyman.

5 Signs Your Breaker Needs to Be Replaced
- It trips again right after you reset it, with nothing else running.
- It feels hot, smells burnt, or there are scorch marks on the panel.
- It will not stay reset, or the switch feels loose or mushy.
- Lights dim or flicker when a big appliance or the AC starts.
- Your panel is a recalled brand such as Zinsco or Federal Pacific. These need a panel replacement, not just a new breaker.
Breaker Trips When the AC Starts
If the breaker trips when your air conditioner kicks on, the cause can be on the electrical side (a worn breaker, a loose connection, an undersized circuit) or on the AC side (a failing capacitor or compressor). Because Smartchoice is licensed for both HVAC (C-20) and electrical (C-10), one technician can check both. Read more: why your AC keeps tripping the breaker, and what it costs to fix.

Breaker Installation FAQ
My breaker keeps tripping — do I need a new one?
Sometimes, but not always. A breaker can wear out and need replacing, but repeated tripping often means the circuit is overloaded and needs a new dedicated circuit, or that there’s a wiring fault. We diagnose the real cause first so the fix actually lasts.
Can I replace a circuit breaker myself?
We strongly advise against it. A breaker has to match the wire size, the correct amperage, and your specific panel brand — get any of those wrong and you create a fire hazard. The work also happens inside an energized panel, which is dangerous. This is a job for a licensed electrician.
What’s the difference between a GFCI and an AFCI breaker?
A GFCI protects against shock and is required around water (kitchens, baths, garages, outdoors). An AFCI protects against fire from arcing wires and is required in living areas like bedrooms. Many homes benefit from both.
Do I need a permit to install or replace a breaker?
New circuits, sub-panels, and panel work typically require a permit and inspection in Orange County. We handle the permitting and inspection for you as part of the job.
Can you add a breaker for my EV charger or AC?
Yes — that’s a perfect example of where being licensed for both electrical and HVAC pays off. We can add the dedicated circuit, confirm your panel has capacity (or upgrade it), and wire the equipment — all with one company.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. We provide free estimates on breaker installation and replacement, so you’ll know the scope and price before any work begins.
