Service Repair

Our highly skilled technicians ensuring your equipment operates efficiently and safely.

Your air conditioning unit, as well as your home heating setup, both require regular maintenance for optimal function. Leaving maintenance aside for long periods of time runs the risk of your system breaking down when you need it most. Nobody wants their air conditioning system to fail in the middle of a heatwave. Air conditioning maintenance and heater maintenance is among what we do best at Smartchoice Air Conditioning, Heating, & Electrical. These routine services keep you from having a much larger expense.

Common Issues When Air Conditioning and Heater Maintenance Isn’t Regular

Failure to perform regular maintenance on your HVAC system can lead to a range of common issues, including:

    • Dirty Filters

Dirty or clogged filters restrict airflow, reducing system efficiency and potentially causing damage to other components. They also can lower the air quality of your home.

    • Refrigerant Leaks

Low refrigerant levels can lead to decreased cooling capacity and increased energy consumption, potentially causing system breakdowns and compressor damage. In addition to that, these gases can be harmful to health!

    • Frozen Evaporator Coils

Poor airflow or refrigerant issues can cause evaporator coils to freeze, resulting in reduced cooling capacity and potential damage to the compressor.

    • Faulty Thermostats

A malfunctioning thermostat can cause your HVAC system to run inefficiently or inconsistently, leading to discomfort and higher energy bills.

    • Ignition Problems

Ignition system failures in furnaces can prevent your heating system from starting or cause it to shut down unexpectedly, leaving you without heat when you need it most.

These are just some of the most common we run into, but are hardly the limit of what we see when it comes to air conditioning repair or heating repair calls we take. Breakdowns seldom happen when it’s convenient for you, so get ahead of the potential problems by calling out the professionals at Smartchoice Air Conditioning, Heating, and Electrical. We’ll ensure your system is ready to take on the worst of the hot and cold months, and if it’s not, we’ll recommend the next best solution.

Chemical Coil and Blower Cleaning

Every tune-up includes a rinse of the outdoor coil. When a coil or the blower is coated with dust, grease or bacteria, a rinse isn’t enough. Most tune-ups stop at the rinse; a chemical cleaning reaches the dirt and bacteria a rinse leaves behind. Flat price per system:

ServicePrice
Outdoor (condenser) coil chemical cleaning: a coil cleaner that lifts dust and kills bacteria, then a full rinse$275 per system
Indoor (evaporator) coil chemical cleaning: we open the coil box so the coil is cleaned from every side$375 per system
Blower compartment and blower wheel: we take the blower assembly out and clean it in a chemical bath$355 per system

Second system at the same address, same visit: 25% off its flat rate.

We only recommend a chemical cleaning when your tune-up shows a dirty coil or blower, and we show you photos first. Not sure? Start with the $79 tune-up or a membership visit.

    HVAC Maintenance FAQs

How much does an AC or furnace tune-up cost in Orange County?

A single-system tune-up at Smartchoice is $79. That’s different from our $65 service call, which is a diagnostic visit when something is already wrong — and it’s credited toward the repair. A tune-up is preventive: a full inspection, cleaning and performance check while the system is working. Most Orange County homeowners come out ahead with our Membership plan, which covers both the spring cooling visit and the fall heating visit for $239 a year.

How often should my AC and heater be serviced?

Once a year each: the air conditioner in spring, before the May-to-October cooling season, and the heater in fall. In Orange County the AC does most of the work, so the spring visit matters most — a dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant charge will show up in July as a breakdown or a high bill. Heat pumps heat and cool, so they get both visits.

    What’s included in a Smartchoice tune-up?

The cooling visit covers thermostat calibration, filter check, condenser coil rinse, evaporator coil inspection, refrigerant level and pressures, supply-and-return temperature split, blower and motor amperage, capacitors and contactor, electrical connections, and the condensate drain line. The heating visit covers burners and ignition, safety controls, venting, blower and electrical checks. Every visit ends with a 25-point inspection and a written report of anything that needs attention.

Is a maintenance plan worth it?

For most homes, yes. The Smartchoice Membership is $239 a year (or $22 a month) and includes both seasonal visits, the 25-point inspection, 15% off labor on any repair during the year, and priority scheduling — which matters most during a July heat wave when the schedule is full. Two tune-ups alone would cost $158, so the plan pays for itself the first time you need a repair. Details are on our membership page.

Does maintenance actually lower my energy bill?

Yes, measurably. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that replacing a dirty filter alone can cut an air conditioner’s energy use by 5–15%, and a dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant charge pushes consumption up further because the system runs longer to reach the same temperature. A tuned system also starts and stops less often, which is where most compressor wear happens.

Will skipping maintenance void my manufacturer warranty?

It can. Most manufacturers — Goodman, Carrier, Lennox and others — require documented annual maintenance by a licensed contractor to honor parts warranty claims, and they will ask for service records. Membership visits give you that record automatically. If you have a newer system under a 10-year parts warranty, this is the cheapest insurance you can buy for it.

What is the “$5,000 rule” for HVAC?

Multiply the system’s age by the repair estimate. Under $5,000, repair it; over $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. A $600 repair on a 6-year-old system ($3,600) is an easy yes; the same repair on a 12-year-old system ($7,200) deserves a replacement quote alongside it. We’re a repair-first company, so we’ll show you both numbers and let you decide — see our AC installation page for current pricing.

    Importance of Regular Maintenance

Regular HVAC maintenance is critical for maintaining the efficiency, reliability, and longevity of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Neglecting maintenance can lead to a variety of issues, including decreased efficiency, higher energy bills, and costly repairs. By investing in routine maintenance with Smartchoice Air Conditioning, Heating & Electrical, you can enjoy the following benefits:

    • Optimized Performance

Proper maintenance ensures that your HVAC system operates at peak performance, providing consistent heating and cooling comfort year-round.

    • Extended Lifespan

    • Improved Energy Efficiency

A well-maintained HVAC system operates more efficiently, reducing energy consumption and lowering utility bills.

    • Enhanced Indoor Air Quality

Clean filters and coils improve indoor air quality by reducing allergens, dust, and other airborne particles circulating throughout your home or business.
