Service Repair

Our highly skilled technicians ensuring your equipment operates efficiently and safely.

Most contractors sell you a new system. We try to fix yours first, and the cheapest fix is the one you never need. A spring AC tune-up in Orange County is how we find the small problems before July does: many summer breakdowns start as a weak capacitor or a dirty coil, and a tune-up can catch both while they are still a quote.

$79 per system · 25-point inspection with an outdoor coil rinse · written report. Call (949) 229-6766 or book online.

The $79 AC Tune-Up Price, Up Front

Tune-up prices in Orange County vary widely, and so does what’s included. Ours is $79 per system (one central air conditioner or one heat pump), flat, and $59 for a second system on the same visit. The checklist below is the whole visit, and what it doesn’t cover is printed with prices.

Repairs are never part of the tune-up: when we find something, the technician writes up a “from” price and the choice is yours; the repair is a separate job you approve first. Estimates for new systems are free and separate, so a tune-up is an inspection, not a sales call. We tune up every major brand, whoever installed it. Multifamily and commercial maintenance is quoted per property. Current offers are on our special offers page.

A tune-up is not a repair call:

What the 25-Point AC Tune-Up Includes

These are the 25 points on our cooling checklist, grouped so you can scan them.

    Electrical (8 points)

    • Inspect and tighten electrical connections
    • Test the start and run capacitors (the parts that start the motors)
    • Inspect the contactor (the switch that turns the outdoor unit on)
    • Inspect the condenser fan motor and blades
    • Inspect blower motor operation and amperage (how much current it draws; a high draw means wear)
    • Check compressor operation and amperage
    • Inspect the disconnect box and electrical whip (the shut-off switch by the outdoor unit and the short conduit to it)
    • Inspect wiring and low- and high-voltage connections

    Cooling and refrigerant (6 points)

    • Inspect the condenser (outdoor) coil
    • Rinse the outdoor coil, on every cooling tune-up
    • Inspect the evaporator (indoor) coil
    • Check refrigerant level and system pressures
    • Measure the temperature split (how much cooler the air leaving the vents is than the air going in)
    • Inspect refrigerant line insulation

Airflow, filter and drain (6 points)

    • Check thermostat calibration
    • Inspect and check the air filter (we install a new one when you provide it)
    • Inspect the blower compartment and blower wheel
    • Inspect ductwork and airflow condition
    • Check condensate drain line operation
    • Flush the condensate drain line if it’s accessible

    Safety and performance (5 points)

    • Test safety controls and switches
    • Check for unusual vibration or noise
    • Verify proper system startup and shutdown
    • Inspect outdoor unit condition and mounting
    • Verify overall cooling performance and write up the report

The written report is yours to keep: what needs attention, with a “from” price, and what’s fine.

What the $79 Tune-Up Does Not Include

Good to know before we arrive: these are separate services with their own prices. A tune-up never “fixes” any of them, and we only do them once you’ve said yes.

    Not in the tune-upPrice
Air filter. Checked; a new one installed when you provide ityour filter
Outdoor (condenser) coil chemical cleaning. A coil cleaner that lifts dust and kills bacteria, then a full rinse$275 per system
Indoor (evaporator) coil chemical cleaning. We open the coil box so the coil is cleaned from every side$375 per system
Blower compartment and wheel cleaning. The blower assembly comes out and is cleaned in a chemical bath$355 per system
Refrigerant. Level and pressures are checked; finding and fixing a leak is a repairleak search from $65 · R-410A from $75/lb · R-454B from $95/lb
Clogged drain line. Flushed if accessible; clearing a clog and adding an overflow switch is a repairfrom $375
Worn electrical parts. Capacitor, contactor, hard-start kit, fan or blower motorcapacitor from $250 · contactor from $239 · hard-start kit from $285 · motor from $389
Thermostat. We can supply the unitstandard from $189 · smart from $299
Compressor replacement. Replaced only when it has failed, never on a tune-upfrom $1,800 out of warranty ($1,800–$2,800); see compressor replacement cost

Every repair price is a starting price; you approve the final number before any work starts.

Book your $79 tune-up: call (949) 229-6766 or schedule online.

Chemical cleanings: we recommend one only when the tune-up shows a dirty coil or blower, with photos first. A second system at the same address on the same visit is 25% off its flat rate, and members get 15% off.

A coil rinse and a chemical cleaning are different jobs. Every cooling tune-up rinses the outdoor coil; a chemical cleaning is the separate job above, for a coil or blower coated with dust, grease or bacteria where a rinse isn’t enough. Both are explained on our HVAC maintenance page.

    One Tune-Up or the Membership

Two tune-ups a year bought one at a time cost $158. The Smartchoice Membership is our HVAC maintenance plan: $239 a year or $22 a month per system, with both seasonal visits plus the discounts and priority that matter in a July heat wave.

    $79 tune-upMembership: $239/yr or $22/mo per system

Termone visitone-year agreement per system; full terms on the membership page

One older system and one honest look before summer: the single tune-up. A newer system under its parts warranty, or one you want to keep for years: the membership.

It costs $81 more than two separate tune-ups and adds 15% off repair labor, 15% off any chemical cleaning ($56 on an evaporator cleaning) and priority scheduling. It also keeps the service record your manufacturer may ask for, and a system Smartchoice installed already includes a year of membership.

Paying yearly saves $25 against the monthly total. One system is one AC and one furnace; a second system gets its own agreement. Sign up on the membership page and we call you to schedule the first visit.

When to Book an AC Tune-Up in Orange County

Spring, before the May-to-October cooling season. The inspection happens while the system works, spring schedules are open, and you get the day you want instead of a wait in the first heat wave.

In Orange County the AC does most of the year’s work, so the spring visit matters most. A dirty condenser coil or a low refrigerant charge found in April is a quote; found in July it’s a breakdown or a high bill.

Fall is for the heating side: a heating tune-up has the same price and its own 25 points, and heat pumps get both visits because they heat and cool. Inland heat and wind-blown dust shorten the life of a coil that is never rinsed; near the coast we recommend coated coils on new systems. Either way, at least once a year.

Selling or buying a house? A tune-up tells you what shape the system is in and what any repairs would cost. One visit covers whichever side is in season: the AC in spring and summer, the heating in fall. It isn’t a full home inspection.

Signs You Need a Repair Instead of a Tune-Up

A tune-up is for a system that works. If any of these is happening, book the $65 HVAC service call instead: it’s credited to the repair and same-day when you call by noon, Monday to Saturday.

    • Warm or weak air from the vents. See why your AC isn’t blowing cold air.
    • The outdoor unit won’t start or keeps shutting down. A weak capacitor is a common summer failure; see capacitor replacement cost.
    • Ice on the refrigerant lines, or water around the indoor unit.
    • The breaker trips when the AC starts.
    • Hissing, rattling or grinding, or a system that runs all afternoon and never cools the house.

On a repair call you get a flat “from” price before any work and a 100% labor warranty on the repair. For a big repair we use the $5,000 rule: system age times repair estimate; under $5,000 repair it, over $5,000 we quote a replacement alongside. Common repair prices are on AC repair.

Why Air Conditioning Maintenance Pays in Orange County

    • Lower bills. A rinsed coil and a correct refrigerant charge keep the system from running longer for the same temperature, which costs most on SCE time-of-use rates. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that replacing a dirty filter alone can cut an air conditioner’s energy use by 5–15%.
    • Less wear. A tuned system cycles less, which is where most compressor wear happens, and a weak capacitor caught in April is a $250 part instead of a July breakdown.
    • Your service record. Manufacturers can ask for service records with a parts-warranty claim; the written report from each tune-up is that record.

    AC Tune-Up FAQs

How much does an AC tune-up cost in Orange County?

$79 per system at Smartchoice ($59 for a second system on the same visit): a 25-point inspection, an outdoor coil rinse and a written report. The $65 HVAC service call is the diagnostic visit when something is already wrong, credited toward the repair. The membership covers the spring cooling and fall heating visits for $239 a year or $22 a month per system. Prices in Orange County vary widely; compare the checklist, not just the headline price.

What does an AC tune-up include?

All 25 points listed above: eight electrical checks (capacitors, contactor, motors, compressor amperage, wiring), six cooling checks (both coils, outdoor coil rinse, refrigerant pressures, temperature split), six airflow checks (thermostat, filter, blower, ductwork, drain line) and five safety and performance checks ending in the written report. We install a new filter when you provide one. Chemical coil cleaning, refrigerant and parts are separate and priced “from”.

How often should you service your AC?

Air conditioner maintenance once a year, in spring before the May-to-October cooling season, and the heater once a year in fall; an annual HVAC inspection covers both, and heat pumps get both visits. In Orange County the AC does most of the work, so the spring visit matters most. The written report from each visit is also the service record a manufacturer can ask for with a parts-warranty claim.

Is annual air conditioning maintenance worth it?

For most Orange County homes, yes. Replacing a dirty filter alone can cut an air conditioner’s energy use by 5–15% (U.S. Department of Energy), a tuned system cycles less, and a weak capacitor or a dirty coil gets caught in April instead of July. Ours prints the full checklist and the exclusions, so you know what the $79 buys before we arrive.

Can I do my own AC maintenance?

Some of it. Replace the filter on schedule, keep indoor vents clear of furniture and rugs, keep the drain line clear, and listen for hissing, rattling or grinding. Refrigerant pressures, motor amperage, the capacitor test and the coil rinse are what the technician’s visit is for.

Does the tune-up include coil cleaning?

It includes an outdoor coil rinse on every cooling tune-up. A chemical cleaning is a different job, for a coil or blower coated with dust, grease or bacteria where a rinse isn’t enough: outdoor coil $275 per system, indoor coil $375, blower compartment and wheel $355. We recommend it only after showing you photos of the coil.

Is an HVAC maintenance plan worth it, or is one tune-up enough?

One tune-up a year is the minimum for a system you want to keep. The Smartchoice Membership is $239 a year or $22 a month per system: two tune-ups (spring cooling, fall heating) that would cost $158 on their own, plus 15% off repair labor, 15% off chemical cleaning and priority scheduling in a heat wave. A system Smartchoice installed includes the first year.

When is the best time for AC maintenance in Orange County?

Spring, before the May-to-October cooling season, while the system works and schedules are open. If your AC isn’t cooling, book the $65 HVAC service call instead: same-day when you call by noon, Monday to Saturday. For a tune-up, call (949) 229-6766 (Mon–Fri 8–5, Sat 9–4) or schedule online and we’ll give you the next opening.
