Heat Pump Repair Prices in Orange County

Real prices, so you know what to expect before we arrive. Repair prices are “from” because a second part, a start kit or a different part type can add to them; you always approve the final price first. Where a heat pump shares a part with an air conditioner, the price is the same as on our AC repair page.

Most heat pump repairs in Orange County fall between $250 and $900. The two big ones are the reversing valve and the compressor, and for those we always show you the repair-or-replace math before you decide.

Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair

  • Blowing cool air in heating mode, or warm air in cooling mode. Often the reversing valve (the part that switches the system between heating and cooling), a low refrigerant charge or a thermostat set to the wrong mode. Check the thermostat first; then call.
  • Ice on the outdoor unit in winter that doesn’t clear. A light frost is normal and the defrost cycle melts it. Ice that stays or builds up means the defrost control, a sensor or the outdoor fan isn’t doing its job. Turn the system off so the compressor isn’t working against a block of ice.
  • Outdoor unit humming but the fan won’t spin. Almost always a weak capacitor or a failing fan motor, in heating or cooling season.
  • The breaker trips when the heat pump starts. A hard-starting compressor, a shorted part or a loose connection. See why a heat pump or AC trips the breaker; as licensed electricians we check the breaker and the disconnect on the same visit.
  • Short cycling (on and off every few minutes). Thermostat, low charge, a dirty filter or an electrical fault.
  • Grinding, squealing or a loud click without a start. Motor bearings, a contactor or an electrical part failing. Shut it off and call.
  • A sudden jump in your SCE bill with no change in weather. The system is running longer to do the same job, often from a weak part, a low charge or a stuck reversing valve.

Not sure whether it’s the heat pump or the thermostat? See why your system isn’t blowing cold air for the checks you can do before we arrive.

Repairs We Finish on the First Visit

Our trucks carry the parts that fail most on Orange County heat pumps: capacitors, contactors, hard-start kits, outdoor fan motors and common thermostats. Most no-heat and no-cool calls end with a part like these and the system running again the same day. Defrost boards, inverter boards for Daikin and Mitsubishi systems, reversing valves and compressors are brand-specific; we tell you the price and the date before you decide.

Repair First, Replace Only When the Math Says So

Most contractors sell you a new system. We try to fix yours first. A $250 capacitor is not a reason to buy an $8,000 heat pump.

We use the $5,000 rule: multiply the system’s age by the repair price. Under $5,000, repairing is usually the better deal. Over $5,000, a new system usually is. Inland Orange County systems last about 12–15 years. Units installed before about 2010 run on R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer made, so a large leak on those systems often tips the math toward replacement. Either way you get the honest numbers, and the choice is yours. Read the full repair-or-replace guide, try the repair-or-replace calculator, or see heat pump installation prices ($6,500–$10,000 for 2.5–3 tons, $9,500–$13,500+ for 4–5 tons, installed). Ask us about current SCE and TECH Clean California heat pump incentives when you compare.

What Happens on a Heat Pump Repair Visit

  1. Call by noon for same-day service, Monday to Saturday, or schedule online.
  2. Diagnosis. The technician tests the system in both modes, checks the refrigerant pressures, the capacitor, the contactor, the motors, the defrost control and the electrical connections, and finds the cause.
  3. Flat price before any work. You see the “from” price for the repair and approve it; the $65 service call is credited to it.
  4. The repair, usually with parts from the truck. Brand-specific parts are ordered with a price and date you’ve agreed to.
  5. Test and warranty. The system runs in both modes before we leave, and the repair carries a 90-day warranty.

Keep It From Breaking Again

Most heat pump failures start as a weak capacitor, a dirty coil or a low refrigerant charge that a tune-up would have caught. A heat pump works in both seasons, so it gets both visits: the spring AC tune-up covers the refrigerant and the outdoor unit, the fall heating tune-up covers the thermostat, blower, airflow and electrical checks. Each is $79, or join the membership ($239 a year or $22 a month per system) for both visits plus 15% off repair labor and priority scheduling.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs

How much does heat pump repair cost in Orange County?

Most repairs run $250–$900: a capacitor from $250, a contactor from $239, an outdoor fan or blower motor from $389, a defrost control board from $389. The big two are a reversing valve from $1,250 and a compressor at $1,800–$2,800 ($700–$1,450 under manufacturer warranty). The $65 service call is credited to the repair, and you approve a flat price before any work.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heating mode?

Check the thermostat mode first. If it’s set right, the usual causes are a stuck reversing valve, a low refrigerant charge, or a system in its defrost cycle (which blows cool air for a few minutes and is normal). If it stays cold, book the $65 service call; we test the system in both modes and give you a flat price.

Is ice on my heat pump normal in winter?

A light frost is normal, and the defrost cycle clears it. Ice that builds up, covers the coil or never melts means the defrost control, a sensor or the outdoor fan has failed, or the charge is low. Turn the system off and call; running it iced over strains the compressor.

Should I repair or replace my heat pump?

Use the $5,000 rule: the system’s age in years times the repair price. Under $5,000, repair it. Over $5,000, we show you a new-system price alongside the repair and you decide. A new heat pump runs $6,500–$10,000 for 2.5–3 tons installed; ask us about current SCE and TECH Clean California incentives.

Do you repair heat pumps you didn’t install?

Yes, every major brand, including Daikin, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, Bryant and Mitsubishi. Brand-specific parts such as inverter boards are quoted after the diagnosis.

Can you come the same day?

Yes, when you call by noon, Monday to Saturday. The office answers Monday to Friday 8–5 and Saturday 9–4. We don’t offer after-hours service.

Does the repair come with a warranty?

Every repair carries a 90-day warranty on parts and labor from Smartchoice, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on the part. Installations are different: new heat pumps carry a 5-year labor and 10-year manufacturer parts warranty.

Can a heat pump tune-up prevent these repairs?

Many of them. A weak capacitor, a dirty coil and a low charge are the three most common causes of a summer or winter breakdown, and a tune-up catches all three while they’re still a quote. Heat pumps get both the spring AC tune-up and the fall heating tune-up, $79 each or both with the membership.
