Our highly skilled technicians ensuring your equipment operates efficiently and safely.
A thermostat is the part of your system you touch every day, and the one most often installed wrong: the wrong model for a heat pump, no C-wire so it drops off Wi-Fi, a schedule nobody set. Smartchoice Air Conditioning, Heating & Electrical installs standard and smart thermostats across Orange County, checks compatibility first, and leaves with the app on your phone and a schedule set.
Standard thermostat supplied and installed from $189 · smart thermostat supplied, installed and set up from $299 · from $149 to install one you already own · 1-year labor warranty · Call (949) 229-6766 or book online.

Every price includes the visit, the compatibility check, the installation and a 1-year labor warranty; the supplied tiers include the thermostat, and the smart tiers add Wi-Fi, app and schedule setup. Prices are “from” because an adapter or a new wire can add to them; you approve the final price before we start.

Which Thermostat Fits Your System
Thermostats look alike on the shelf, but what they can control differs. Three things decide the fit:
- The C-wire. Most smart thermostats need a common wire for steady 24-volt power. Many Orange County homes built before the 2000s have four wires and no C. Some models run without it by drawing power through the other wires, which works on some furnaces and misbehaves on others. We test at the furnace or air handler; a spare wire in the bundle is used, otherwise an adapter kit (from $99) or a new wire (from $249) solves it.
- The kind of system. A single-stage gas furnace with an air conditioner works with almost anything. A heat pump needs a thermostat that handles the reversing valve and the backup heat; two-stage systems need the extra terminals; a dual-fuel home (heat pump plus gas furnace) needs a model that runs both. Some variable-capacity systems use the manufacturer’s own communicating thermostat, which a retail model may not replace; we tell you before you buy.
- The voltage. All of the above is low-voltage (24 V) control. Baseboard and wall heaters use line-voltage thermostats (120 or 240 V), a different product; ask us what fits.
Brands We Install
We supply and install Google Nest (Nest Thermostat, Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen), ecobee (Smart Thermostat Essential, Enhanced and Premium), Honeywell Home (T6 Pro Wi-Fi, T10+ Pro with room sensor) and Emerson Sensi; for a standard programmable, Honeywell Home or Emerson. Nest is the clean screen that learns your routine, ecobee adds room sensors and air-quality readings, Honeywell covers two-stage, dual-fuel and heat pump setups that need every terminal. We are not tied to one brand.
You Bought It Already? We’ll Install It
Some contractors won’t touch a thermostat they didn’t sell. We will. Bring the Nest, ecobee or Honeywell from the store and we install it for a flat price: from $149 for a standard thermostat, from $179 for a smart one with the compatibility check, Wi-Fi and app setup and the walk-through. If the box won’t work with your system, we tell you before we open it, so you can exchange it. Our 1-year labor warranty covers the installation; the manufacturer covers the thermostat.
What Happens on the Visit
- Book. Call (949) 229-6766 or schedule online, Monday to Friday 8–5 or Saturday 9–4. Tell us your system and the thermostat you want, or send a photo of the current one.
- Compatibility check. The technician confirms the system type, counts the wires and tests for a C-wire at the furnace or air handler.
- Installation. Power off, wires labeled, new base mounted (with a cover plate if the old one left a mark), wires connected, adapter fitted if needed.
- System setup. Equipment type, stages, heat pump and fan settings are configured; heating, cooling and the fan are each tested.
- Wi-Fi and app. The thermostat joins your Wi-Fi, the app goes on your phone, and we set a schedule with away and sleep settings.
- Walk-through. You see how to change the schedule from the wall and from the app.
Smart Thermostat + Tune-Up in One Visit
A new thermostat tells the system what to do; a tune-up makes sure it can. If the capacitor is weak or the coil is dirty, the smartest thermostat still runs a struggling system. Add a $79 AC tune-up in spring or a $79 heating tune-up in fall to the same visit, or join the membership ($239 a year or $22 a month per system) for both visits plus 15% off repair labor and priority scheduling. Ask us whether SCE or Anaheim Public Utilities currently offers a smart thermostat rebate; programs change, so we check at the visit rather than print a number here.
Thermostat Problems We Fix
Not every thermostat call ends with a new thermostat. The $65 HVAC service call covers the diagnosis and is credited to the repair.
- Blank screen. Dead batteries, a tripped condensate overflow switch that cuts the 24 V, a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board, or a failed transformer. The thermostat is often fine.
- Short cycling (on and off every few minutes). A thermostat in direct sun or a draft, a cycle-rate setting that doesn’t match the equipment, or a loose wire. If the thermostat checks out, the cause is in the system: see AC repair, furnace repair or heat pump repair.
- Wrong readings. A thermostat on an exterior wall, near a supply register or over a lamp reads the wrong room. Moving it or adding a room sensor fixes many “the AC never shuts off” complaints.
- Wiring. A DIY swap with a wire on the wrong terminal can leave a heat pump heating in cooling mode or a furnace with no fan. We trace, relabel and fix the wiring at both ends.
Before you call, see why your AC isn’t blowing cold air: check the mode, the batteries and the filter first.

Thermostat Installation FAQs
How much does thermostat installation cost in Orange County?
A standard programmable thermostat, supplied and installed, is from $189. A smart thermostat supplied, installed and set up is from $299 (Nest Thermostat, ecobee Essential, Emerson Sensi), $379 (mid-range), $449 (Nest Learning, ecobee Premium) or $499 (Honeywell T10+ Pro with room sensor). Your own thermostat installed: from $149 standard, $179 smart. A C-wire adapter adds from $99, a new C-wire from $249.
Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?
Usually, yes. The C (common) wire gives the thermostat steady 24-volt power for the screen and Wi-Fi. Some models run without one, but they can drop off Wi-Fi or make the furnace click on and off. We test first; a spare wire in the wall is used, otherwise an adapter kit (from $99) or a new wire (from $249) fixes it.
Can you install a thermostat I bought myself?
Yes. Installation only is from $149 for a standard thermostat and from $179 for a smart one, including the compatibility check, Wi-Fi and app setup and a walk-through. If the model won’t work with your system, we say so before the box is opened, so you can exchange it. The installation carries our 1-year labor warranty; the manufacturer covers the thermostat.
Which smart thermostats work with a heat pump?
One that controls the reversing valve (the O/B terminal) and the backup heat. The Nest Learning Thermostat, the ecobee Enhanced and Premium and the Honeywell Home T6 Pro and T10+ Pro all do; the entry models suit most single-stage heat pumps. For dual fuel or two stages we pick a model with the right terminals. For the heat pump itself, see heat pump repair.
How long does a thermostat installation take?
About an hour for a straight swap with a C-wire present, including Wi-Fi and app setup. An adapter adds a little time; a new C-wire through an accessible attic is usually the same visit. We tell you before we start if your home needs more.
What happens to a smart thermostat when the Wi-Fi goes out?
It keeps heating and cooling on the last schedule, and you can still change the temperature at the wall. You lose the app and voice control until the Wi-Fi returns, then it reconnects on its own. An outage does not stop your furnace or AC.
I have two zones or two systems. Do I need two thermostats?
Yes, one per zone or system, each priced from the table above; tell us at booking so we bring the right units. A zoned system (one unit, motorized dampers) needs thermostats its zone board accepts, which we check first. Room sensors (ecobee, Nest, Honeywell T10+) let one thermostat average or prioritize rooms, but they don’t control dampers.
Will a smart thermostat lower my electric bill?
It can, if it runs the system less than you do today: setbacks while you’re asleep or away, no AC running in an empty house, a schedule that fits your week. A home that already runs a programmed schedule sees a smaller change than one on a fixed setting all day. We don’t quote a percentage; it depends on your habits, your system and your rate plan.
